CHINESE LUNAR CALENDAR
Year : Wood Horse
Month : 1st
Day : 7th
Today is the 7th day of Chinese New Year, known as 人日 (renri), or literally “Human Day” in Chinese. This means it is the birthday of all humankind. So let us extend our “Happy Birthday” wishes to everyone today.
Chinese legend recorded that God created different kinds of beings in the first 7 days of his creation (similar to the Bible?) as follows:
- First Day : Chicken
- Second Day : Dog
- Third Day : Boar
- Fourth Day : Sheep
- Fifth Day : Cow
- Sixth Day : Horse
- Seventh Day : Human
The Book of Divination (占書), an earlier of publication by Dongfang Suo in the Western Han Dynasty, recorded that cereal was created on the eighth day.
Hence in the Chinese tradition, the first day of the Chinese New Year is regarded as the “birthday” of the chicken, the second day as the “birthday” of the dog, et al with the seventh day being viewed as the common “birthday” of all human beings.
In some overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and Singapore, it is also the day when tossed raw fish salad or yusheng, is eaten for continued wealth and prosperity.
For many Chinese Buddhists, this is another day to avoid meat, the seventh day commemorating the birth of Sakra, lord of the devas in Buddhist cosmology who is analogous to the Jade Emperor.
